Design exploration done efficiently

Design exploration is the process of defining the high-level direction for a website’s design. Design exploration is an iterative process between the designer and the client, where parts of the website are mocked up and then refined until the desired result is reached. While design exploration is an effective technique for prototyping your website’s design, it can become a waste of time if the exploration is not done in a systematic fashion.
Why you need design exploration
It’s important to have alignment between the designer and the client before the designer builds out an entire website design. If the designer were to build out the whole design before getting the client’s feedback, there could be a lot of wasted work.
Design exploration prevents this wasted effort by allowing the designer and client to collaboratively create a foundation for the design. The process allows the client to validate the initial mockups and build a common language with the designer.
How does the process work?
The process is relatively straightforward. Together, you and the designer will identify relevant pieces of the website to serve as examples. Focusing on just a few examples enables fast iteration.
The designer will work with you on these examples to build out things like basic typography and a color palette. You’ll get to see these elements come together in mockups to see if you like the look.

How long does it take?
There is not a strict timeline for design exploration, but it usually takes between a few hours to a few days. If you are just looking to explore examples and get a quick sketch of a style guide, the process might only take a few hours. If you are looking for a robust design foundation, the process may take a few days.
Our recommendation
We highly recommend starting projects with a design exploration phase. This ensures that the finished website delights the user and aligns with your brand identity.
At Microfeller, we offer three hours of design exploration for free. Contact us today to get started!
